Wishing You a Happy VAP Poya Day
Vap Poya Day (also known as Vap Full Moon Poya) is one of the most important Buddhist full moon days in Sri Lanka, usually falling in October. It marks several significant religious and historical events in the Buddhist tradition.
Main reasons why Vap Poya Day is important:
-
End of the Rainy Retreat (Vassana Kalaya)
-
Vap Poya marks the end of the three-month "Vassana" retreat, during which Buddhist monks stay in one place, often in temples or monasteries, engaging in deep meditation and study.
-
-
Beginning of the Katina Ceremony (Robe Offering Ceremony)
-
After the retreat, lay devotees offer new robes and other requisites to the monks in a grand ceremony known as the Katina Pinkama.
-
This is one of the most meritorious acts a Buddhist can perform.
-
-
Buddha’s Return from Tavatimsa Heaven
-
According to Buddhist belief, the Buddha ascended to Tavatimsa Heaven to preach the Abhidhamma to his mother, Queen Maya, who was reborn there.
-
He returned to Earth on Vap Full Moon Poya Day, which is celebrated as a divine event of great significance.
-
-
A Time of Generosity and Reflection
-
Vap Poya encourages Buddhists to practice Dana (giving), Sila (virtue), and Bhavana (meditation).
-
It’s also a time to reflect on moral conduct and renew spiritual commitments.
